I received a rather superfluous
email this morning. It was from the airline I’m flying with and the subject
line said, “Reminder: Your flight is departing in 7 days’ time!” Thank you,
airline. I was hardly likely to forget!! Although I still can’t believe that
this time next week, I’ll be up in the air… :-)

The Countdown Continues...
In today’s countdown news: it’s 30
days (exactly one month) until I leave!! I’m starting to get just a little bit excited…
And also a tad impatient!
After having been busy with
practical preparations for several months, it feels strange to only have a
short list of small jobs left to do. Sometimes I worry that I must be
forgetting something important. Surely there is something that I ought to be
doing! So, not knowing what else to do with myself, I have busied myself with
Christmas preparations.
For the first time in my life, I
have completed all of my Christmas shopping, wrapped every gift, made my
Christmas cards and begun writing the cards before the beginning of December. (I’m
usually the one complaining if I so much as see a Christmas decoration or hear
a Christmas carol before December!) I must admit that I shall be glad to escape
the pre-Christmas stupidity that seems to descend upon our shopping centres in
a manner beyond all reason!

Fun With Foreign Currencies
Somebody gave me my first Filipino
pesos a couple of days ago! They kind of remind me of Paraguayan guaranĂes in
that 1) a handful of money is not necessarily worth very much, and 2) they are
paper (unlike Aussie dollars), with each denomination having a unique colour
scheme (unlike U.S. dollars). I don’t mind this similarity, but I do hope that the
Filipino coins are not like Paraguayan coins!
During the time I was living in
Paraguay, several denominations of coin had about four completely different
(different size, different colour) versions in circulation. It can be hard
enough to figure out the coins of a different currency without an added
complication such as this! (I think I probably figured out U.S. coins just
before I was about to leave, after having used them for 16 months. Trying to
use 25 cent coins when I was used to 20 cent coins really messed with my head!)
Another special feature of Paraguayan
coins was that they were worth so little that supermarkets often gave change in
the form of a handful of lollies (candy, my American friends!), rather than messing
around with the smaller coins. This practice always amused me.

The Countdown Is On...
The countdown is on… It is now 53
days until I leave!! I realize that 53 may seem like a rather random and insignificant
number; it’s just the day I happened to get around to updating my blog! :-)
I have been tracking the weeks
until I leave for a while now, because I leave on a Sunday and it’s often on Sundays
that people ask me when I’m leaving. I have only begun counting the days,
however, since accomplishing two important tasks:
1) I managed to get all the
necessary stamps, seals and signatures on my paperwork to allow me to apply for
a working visa in the Philippines. This was no small feat. I spent four days walking
around the city before I was able to successfully obtain what I needed.
...and so the countdown is on!!

Recent Adventures
Have you ever played the game “Have
you Ever…”? It was a favourite with our youth group for a while. It’s one of
those games where the person in middle of the circle tries to steal a seat when
those who were seated are exchanging places. The person in the middle thinks of
something they have done before and then asks the group, “Have you ever (fill
in the blank)?” Anyone who has also done that same thing has to get up and
change seats while the person in the middle tries to steal one of the seats.
Anyway,
that phrase has been rattling around in my head as I’ve been thinking about the
past few weeks, so here are some of my contributions from my recent adventures…
Have you ever... watched a bilby eat
his dinner?
A couple of weeks ago, a friend and I spent a few days camping at
Congelin campgrounds in the Dryandra woodland. We did a tour of the Barna Mia
animal sanctuary on the first evening we were down there and really enjoyed seeing
some of our beautiful native marsupials close-up. (By close-up I mean that my
friend had a bilby sniffing her shoe at one stage, and we were literally trying
not to trip over the woylies and boodies who were racing us down the path to
the first feeding station!) It was an amazing experience.
Have you ever... shared your campsite
with a racehorse goanna?
This
little guy (he really is quite little as far as goannas go) was making his home
under our picnic table.
Other wildlife at our campsite included kangaroos (of
course), a golden whistler who serenaded us each day while we were eating
lunch, and a brushtail possum who went cruising by one evening with her baby riding
on her back.
Have
you ever... used a wooden spoon as a rolling pin?
Slightly unorthodox and slightly
tedious, but it works! The bread we brought from home went mouldy before we got
to eat any of it, so our lunch “Plan B” was a flat-bread type event (well, as
flat as I could make it using self-raising flour and wooden spoon rolling pin!).
It would probably have failed any contest of presentation, but it was pretty
tasty. :-)
Have
you ever... been awakened by the sound of a kookaburra savagely attacking
his own
reflection on a glass door?
At
least that’s my best guess as to what this dude (I took this later in the day,
but I’m pretty sure it was him) was doing tapping so insistently on the laundry
door at 6 AM…
Have you ever... been on a
rollercoaster?
Yes,
finally – last week, when I spent a very full (read, “enjoyable but exhausting”)
day at Perth Royal Show with a friend. We stayed for almost 12 hours, which
enabled us to see and do everything we wanted to, whilst also getting plenty of
exercise in the process!
Have
you ever... seen a cop in a kilt doing the Hokey Pokey?
One
of our breaks from walking around the showgrounds was when we sat down to watch
the WA Police pipe band perform. Apart from traditional bagpipe music, they also
played some jazz pieces and the Hokey Pokey. Random but kind of cool.
Have
you ever... seen a lamb with a face as cute at this?
I went back after I had changed the memory card in my camera just so I could take his picture. He looks just like a little teddy bear. :-)
Have you ever... spent all day washing your hands because you just can’t help but
touch all the animals?
Not the greatest picture, I know,
but you get the idea. You do have to wonder about the point of washing your
hands when you know you’re just going to get them dirty again the next time you
see an animal you can touch! I had a little calf sucking on my fingers at one
stage during the day. Can you tell that I love animals?!!
Have
you ever... tasted camel’s milk?
I can’t
say it was ever on my list of things to try, but I guess I can now add it to my
“been there, done that” list! It didn’t have a bad taste (it actually had a
very mild flavour), but I still prefer the creaminess of cow’s milk.

Short Post, Big News
I am very excited to announce that I have bought my plane tickets and finally have an actual departure date for the Philippines! I am leaving Perth on Sunday 28th December 2014 (at a very civilized hour, for those of you who might be interested in seeing me off at the airport), spending a few days with friends in Hong Kong on the way, and then arriving in Manila on the 31st. Woo hoo!! Philippines, here I come!!

Packing: You're Doing it Wrong!
Yesterday I
called the Western Australian contact for FOREX, the company that ships boxes from
Australia to the Philippines. I was really only intending to find out where
their outlet is so that I could work out when to pick up a box or two. Although
I don’t need to send my boxes just yet, I thought it would be helpful to have
one in my possession to give me an idea of how much I might be able to fit into
it. Anyway, by the end of the day, I had
two boxes delivered right to my door!
They are
bigger than I was expecting; that is, I had the dimensions so I knew how big
they are, but they LOOK bigger than I expected them to. I am also quite
impressed with how sturdy they are. There are four flaps of cardboard on the
bottom of the box, so it should be able to handle the weight of everything I
want to pile in there.
But although
they are quite large, sturdy boxes, you are still not allowed to pack motor
vehicles, motorbikes, people (alive or dead) or your neighbour’s favourite pet into
them! (Check out their website if you don’t believe me: https://www.forexworld.com.au/cargoFAQ.php#.VBD6YmPzuME)
So naturally...
...this was just begging to be done! :-)
