When I was a child, my home church used to have monthly evening
services, but we have never had a weekly Sunday evening service. After I
finished high school, my sister and I began to occasionally visit other
churches on Sunday evenings. We would usually visit a church where we knew someone
and would often end up going round to someone’s house or going out for supper
with our friends after the service.
There is one church we visited that I’ve continued to go back to
over the years, despite the fact that my sister’s friend is no longer there. I
may only get there once every few years and I may only really know a handful of
people (and them not very well), but I always enjoy seeing the friends I’ve
made there.
Last Sunday I visited this church for the first time in probably two
or three years. Sitting behind me were an elderly couple who evidently had no
idea who I was but had nevertheless been praying for me for years. They were so
happy to finally meet me and to have a face to go with my name. And I, as you no
doubt can imagine, was greatly encouraged by meeting them.
It is possible to calculate and quantify my financial needs, but how
do you measure the need for faithful prayer partners? I am utterly convinced
that I could never have too many of them. One can never be prayed for too much!
